Why Do You Do What You Do? How Acting With Intent Changes Your Day

Headline reading 'Why do you do what you do? Act with intent.' with the labels Habits, Reflection, Intent and Think before you act

Have you ever taken a moment to think about why you do what you do?

Habits run on autopilot

We do a lot of things without consciously doing them. They become habits or rituals, and it almost feels like our minds are programmed to do them. Even the method of an action becomes automatic.

When you brush your teeth, do you just brush, or do you think about how you want to brush? Try to notice the difference between brushing while thinking about it and brushing out of habit. An action with purpose or reflection makes a huge difference.

“That is how it is done”

We do many things because they are done a certain way: we saw someone do it, we were told to, or it is done that way culturally.

It is not about right or wrong. It is about doing something because you wanted to do it and intended to do it.

Acting with intent creates space

Look at it this way and, with time, we begin to think before acting. That is usually difficult, because we do things without much thought behind them. But when you do something with intent, you are already thinking about it. That creates space, and space gives you time to decide whether to do the thing or let it go.

The same goes for work: the tools we pick, the processes we follow, the way it has always been done.

In short, with intent and purpose, more of our day-to-day is done consciously rather than because it has always been done this way. “Think before you act” becomes part of life.

Is it easy? Nope. Try it with one habit this week and do it on purpose. What did you notice?
