There are realities you will never find in the stories of how people got to where they are. Mine is no different.
From the outside, it might look impressive: Founder of One Click Solutions, and an ERP used by businesses in Mozambique and South Africa. But the only reason I was able to start in the first place is the support of my parents.
Without an income, it is close to impossible
Think of it this way: if you don’t have an income, starting a tech business in Mozambique is almost impossible. The odds are very much against you. A tech venture takes time before it pays for itself, and you still have to live while you wait.
My first client took a chance on me
My first client was someone who knew me. He took a chance on me, not because of my skills, but because of where I come from. Trust opened the first door. The skills had to keep it open.
Everyone has something or someone that helped them start. We just don’t always say it.
What I would tell anyone starting out
- Say who helped you. Thanking people doesn’t make your story less impressive.
- Don’t start based on hype. Start from what you really have behind you: income, support, people.
- No safety net yet? Build one first: mentors, first supporters, a steady income.
Who helped you start? I would like to hear your story.
